Tough Shoes for Rough Trails

shoes_opt~s250x500

My favorite feature of the Montrail Mountain Masochist Mid GTX – sturdy yet surprisingly lightweight trail running shoes – was the snug-fitting ankle openings, which kept out every dirt clod and stray pebble. The high cut of the shoe provided reassuring ankle support when I pinballed down a particularly steep, root-laced section of trail, while the forward and reverse treads bit deeply in muddy areas and steadied me on chossy spots. Breathable Gore-Tex lining kept my feet dry despite puddles and sweat. I suspect the Mountain Masochists would work well for hiking. Comes in three versions: Mountain Masochist (super-light, low-cut), GTX (Gore-Tex lined, slightly higher-cut) and the Mid GTX (high-cut, intended for “aggressive terrain”). Highly recommended. Available in men’s and women’s sizes. MSRP $135. See www.montrail.com. – Shelby Gonzalez
