Thunder Bay, July 30, 2020 – Northern Ontario’s tourism anchor and premier entertainment park, Fort William Historical Park (FWHP) is pleased to announce it will be reopening to the public effective immediately.
The FWHP site has been closed since March 16, in response to public health concerns surrounding COVID-19. As it re-opens, FWHP’s top priority is to protect the health and well-being of its visitors. To that end, FWHP staff have been hard at work preparing FWHP to again receive visitors and putting in place strengthened health and safety measures for staff and visitors.
FWHP has implemented a phased reopening plan that follows government guidelines and establishes new health and safety measures. These include measures such as physical distancing, reduced visitor capacity, hand sanitizing stations, and increased frequency of cleaning high traffic areas such as bathrooms, handrails and door handles.
“Since we have been able to return to the Fort, staff have been working hard to prepare the site. This has included de-winterizing all the exhibits and buildings, grounds maintenance, installing a number of new health and safety measures, and adjusting the site, programs and services to help ensure the health and safety of our staff and visitors,” says Sergio Buonocore, FWHP’s General Manager. “We look forward to welcoming back visitors to enjoy the unique experience that Fort William Historical Park has to offer.”
As part of its phased reopening plan, FWHP will be open to the public 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and will be offering a reduced entrance fee for the 2020 season at $5 per person. FWHP will be providing guided tours of the Historic Site at scheduled departure times for groups of up to 10 people. Visitors will also be able explore Fort William using their smart phones and tablets through our high-definition, live action videos available in English, French and Oji-Cree via QR code signage located across the historic site. The Cantine Restaurant will be open with reduced seating indoors and on the outdoor patio.
