Dave Brislance of Lutsen recently took this photo of a gray fox near his home. A more southern species, gray fox were first noted near Duluth in the early 1980s. They are now found throughout northern Minnesota. Bill Berg, a retired Minnesota DNR wildlife biologist, says the northward march of gray fox may be evidence of a warming climate. A smaller size and gray coloration distinquishes them from the common red fox. Unlike most other canines, gray fox frequently climb trees.
