The format of this book hearkens back to an earlier era when folks turned to books, rather than YouTube, when seeking how-to information. A compendium of useful, basic skills, the book provides much of what you need to know in order to exist or, in an emergency, survive in the outdoors. That said, the book could have been written 50 years ago, because much of the information it contains dates to an earlier era. Still, it is good to know how to navigate with a compass, make a blanket splint or build a fire. Best of all, it’s great to still have a way to learn these skills without going online.—Shawn Perich
