The Tweed Museum of Art at the University of Minnesota-Duluth will feature a new exhibit in their Studio Gallery, titled Mounties. The exhibition consists of paintings by Arnold Friberg, Robert Addison, Walter S. Oschman, and other painters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police from the Potlatch Collection. These were created to advertise the company’s paper to the printing trade, demonstrating how well the color red could be reproduced. Contemporaries of their advertising-lore cousins, such as the Jolly Green Giant, Betty Crocker, Paul Bunyan, F13 the Land O’ Lakes 

Indian maiden, and the Mounties were reproduced for nearly 75 years on Northwest Paper/Potlatch calendars before going to the Tweed Museum. The Mounties exhibition will open Tuesday, June 6 and remain on display through August 20.

Summer Theater Festival

The Grand Marais Playhouse will be performing The Game’s Afoot and The Pajama Game musical. Shows will alternate each night, beginning at 7 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for ages 18 and under; can be purchased online or at the door. Performances will be held at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts in Grand Marais.

Blueberry/Art Festival

Ely’s signature summer event, the Blueberry/Art Festival features more than 260 artists and crafters selling their unique hand-crafted items, 30 food vendors and local musicians. Held at Whiteside Park, the festival includes a blueberry pancake breakfast, live music each day and activities for the kids. Local stores and restaurants will offer specials and tasty concoctions with a blueberry theme, such as blueberry lemonade, scones, tea, muffins and smoothies. The festival will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday; attendance is free.

Two Harbors Kayak Festival

Held on Lake Superior, the 20th annual Two Harbors Kayak Festival features multiple races, local exhibitors, SUP classes and demos, kayak demos, kids kayaking and activities, clinics and tours, live music, food and fun for the whole family. Competitive races consist of the Betty’s Pies 5-Mile Race, Ellen Anderson 10-Mile Race and the John Abrahams 18-Mile Marathon, all with various age groups and boat categories. Race registration required. The festival will take place at Burlington Beach in Two Harbors.

Grand Marais Garden Club Flower Show

Attend the Grand Marais Garden Club Flower Show on Saturday, July 29, titled Floral Fiesta. There will be refreshments and a plant exchange, open to everyone. To participate, bring a floral arrangement Saturday morning from 9-11 a.m. and be sure to identify the flowers in your arrangement. The show will be held at the Cook County Community Center in Grand Marais from noon to 5 p.m.

Fisherman’s Picnic

There’s lots to look forward to at the 88th annual Fisherman’s Picnic festival in Grand Marais. Activities include bingo, live music, a dunk tank, Crazy Daze Sales, food and artisan vendors, kiddy rides, blacksmithing demos, logrolling, Library Friends book sales, the fish toss, and of course, the fishburger stand. There will be multiple contests, including the Big Fish Contest sponsored by Bucks and Northern Wilds; held July 29-Aug. 5. Don’t miss the fireworks over the harbor at 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, and the parade at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
